NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Iranian state-affiliated media outlets have reported that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, was killed following a series of missile strikes allegedly carried out by Israel and the United States on Saturday.
According to reports from Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB and the Mehr News Agency, Khamenei “reached martyrdom” during the military operation. The outlets described him as a religious scholar and national leader who “sacrificed his life” for Iran.
However, as of the time of this report, there has been no independent international verification of the claim.
Debate over the accuracy of the reports intensified worldwide after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated there were “many signs the supreme leader is no longer with us,” without directly confirming the claim.
US President Donald Trump also posted on Truth Social that Khamenei was dead, describing the development as “justice.” The White House has not issued a formal policy statement confirming operational details beyond the President’s remarks.
Khamenei, who was 86, had served as Iran’s Supreme Leader since 1989, making him one of the longest-serving political leaders in the Middle East.
Iranian authorities have reportedly announced 40 days of national mourning following the reported killing. State outlets said Khamenei was meeting with senior aides when the building was struck.
There were also reports from Iranian media that several family members were killed during the operation. These claims remain unverified by independent sources.
In response, Iran reportedly launched retaliatory drone strikes targeting US-linked assets in parts of the Gulf region. Airports and major commercial centres in Dubai were said to have been affected, though officials in the United Arab Emirates have yet to release detailed damage assessments.
Several Gulf nations, including the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait, temporarily closed their airspace on Saturday amid rising security concerns.
The reported strike and subsequent retaliation have sharply escalated tensions in the Middle East. Analysts warn that if confirmed, the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader could mark a significant turning point in regional geopolitics.
Governments worldwide are closely monitoring developments, while calls for restraint and diplomatic engagement are emerging from international actors.
Further official confirmations are awaited as the situation continues to evolve.
