IG Mourns Bolanle Raheem, Orders Speedy Investigation

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has condemned the shooting and killing of Barrister Omobolanle Raheem, a lawyer who was allegedly shot and killed by a Policeman attached to Ajiwe Police Station, Ajah, Lagos State.

Newsonline reports that the IGP, who described the incident as unfortunate and sad, has ordered speedy investigation and prosecution of the officers responsible for the ugly and unprofessional act, which doesn’t portray the Nigeria Police Standard Operating Procedure and core values.

In a statement by the Force Headquarters Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP commiserated with the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased as he prayed for the repose of her soul.

He further assured the general public of justice in the case while he warned officers and men of the Force to be professional and people-oriented in the discharge of their duties and operate within the ambit of the law, as the Force’s leadership will not condone any inappropriate or unprofessional acts.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International (AI) has described the death of Bolanle Raheem as horrifying.

Amnesty International said the investigation of the ‘tragic incident’ announced by Police authority must lead and an end to police brutality.

“Amnesty International strongly condemns the killing of Mrs. Omobolanle Raheem by a police officer on Christmas day at Ajiwe Ajah Lagos. It is horrifying that police officers who are meant to protect lives take it with impunity.

“The Nigeria Police Force’s announcement of investigation into this tragic incident must lead to justice, and the erring police officers must face prosecution in independent, impartial, public trials. Reckless resort of the police to deadly force is a human rights violation. Police brutality must end,” AiI said in a statement.
