Pro-Wike Lawmakers bypassed Governor Fubara’s assent to pass 3 critical bills into law.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Rivers State House of Assembly, under Speaker Martins Amaewhule, has passed three critical bills into law without Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s assent.

This move follows constitutional guidelines that allow the legislature to bypass the governor’s approval when assent is withheld.

The laws include the Rivers State Education (Return of Schools) (Amendment) Bill, the Rivers Electricity Market Bill, and the Rivers State Commissions of Inquiry Bill 2024.

These bills had been previously forwarded to Governor Siminialayi Fubara but were stalled due to his inaction.

In response, the lawmakers revisited and passed the bills through legislative procedures, citing Section 100(5) of the 1999 Constitution as their authority.

The session saw members unanimously support the decision, reinforcing the Assembly’s role in ensuring progress for the state.

Speaker Amaewhule reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to upholding constitutional processes and advancing the interests of Rivers residents despite executive hurdles.
