Police has intercepted suspected explosive devices bound for Southwest in Oyo State.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the interception of items suspected to be explosive devices in Saki, the headquarters of Saki West Local Government Area in the Oke Ogun axis of the state.

The disclosure was made on Sunday in a statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Adewale Osifeso.

According to the police, the items were intercepted during a routine stop-and-search operation conducted by operatives acting on credible intelligence. The truck used to transport the suspected devices was immediately secured, while the driver was arrested.

“The truck and the suspected materials were promptly secured and are currently in police custody,” the statement said.

The police spokesperson explained that following a briefing on the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Femi Haruna, ordered a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

As part of the response, specialised officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit and the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Unit were deployed to safely secure the items for proper handling and forensic examination.

“Detailed forensic analysis has since commenced, alongside a thorough and robust investigation to determine the exact nature of the items and their intended use,” the Command added.

The police confirmed that the arrested truck driver is currently in custody and is cooperating with investigators as efforts continue to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Meanwhile, the Command assured residents of Oyo State of its commitment to public safety and urged citizens to remain calm while investigations are ongoing.

The development comes amid heightened security concerns in the state, following reports that a police inspector was killed on Saturday when gunmen suspected to be bandits ambushed a police patrol team in another part of Oyo State.
