Obasanjo Presidential Library has demanded N2.5bn compensation from EFCC over unlawful raid.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has demanded N2.5 billion in compensation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the August 10 raid on its facility.

At a press briefing on Wednesday, the Managing Director, Vitalis Ortese, said the amount was to atone for the alleged damage to the reputation, business, and financial standing of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, as well as the institution.

According to Ortese, EFCC operatives from the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, led by one “Olapade,” stormed the premises around 2 a.m. on Sunday, accompanied by over 50 armed men. They reportedly arrested 93 youths, seized 18 vehicles and mobile devices during a “Wet & Rave Splash Extravaganza” party at the OOPL Rounda fun spot.

He alleged that the operatives fired gunshots and threatened to kill attendees, causing chaos, injuries, and panic as patrons fled the scene.

The management also demanded N1 billion compensation for those arrested and injured, as well as the return of seized vehicles. They further called for public apologies from both the EFCC and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), to be published across major television, print, and online platforms.

“The actions were oppressive, unconstitutional, and clearly actuated by malice against the OOPL and its Chief Promoter,” Ortese stated. “They caused maximum damage to our commercial, business, and financial interests, as well as to Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s standing at home and abroad.”

The OOPL warned that failure to meet its demands within seven days, by August 20, would result in legal action.

Legal Adviser to the library, Olumide Ayeni, SAN, claimed that evidence from the incident, including a beret and spent bullet shell, confirmed indiscriminate shooting during the raid.
