Newsonline reports that the former vice president of Nigeria, from 1999-2007, under ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo said only ill health can stop him from pursuing and achieving his ambition to be Nigeria’s president.
Atiku Abubakar, who has been contesting for Nigeria presidency before the return of Nigeria to the fourth republic and has consistently contested for the highest office in Nigeria since 1999 when Africa’s most populous nation returned to democracy told Financial Times that he hopes to achieve his life long ambition.
“It is a life-long ambition and as long as I’m alive and strong and healthy, I will continue pursuing it,” Atiku said.
Starting from Nigeria’s election in 1992, when the Waziri of Adamawa contested under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), though he stepped down for MKO Abiola for the 1993 general election which was annulled by the then military head of state, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida.
At the return to democracy in 1999, Atiku contested for the presidency, he, however, got elected as Obasanjo’s vice president. In 2007, and 2011, Atiku contested under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In 2015, the former vice president had issues with the then-president, Goodluck Jonathan, he left the PDP with other Northern PDP members including Bukola Saraki to align with President Muhammadu Buhari’s APC that won the 2015 election.
In 2019, Atiku again returned to the PDP and became the presidential candidate. He lost, however, to President Buhari who re-contested for his second tenure in 2019.
As the 2023 election will hold on 25 February, the Waziri of Adamawa is also flying the flag of the main opposition PDP to be the president of Nigeria by May 29, 2023.
