Its exactly 162 days to the February 25, 2023 election; the major contenders, Peter Obi, Atiku and Tinubu, appeal to the voters in different ways, for celebrities like Davido, Frank Edward, Macaroni, Tekno, Psquare and others, how do they see these three major contenders.
Newsonline reports that while Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party appeal to the youthful voters, his party has no elected or appointed political office holder. Unlike, Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, whose party occupies so many political offices and was in power for 16 years in the country.
The same is with Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Except being the party in power at the federal level since 2015 when they defeated the PDP 16 years reign, the APC has governors and senators – like the PDP – in all the six geo-political zones of the country.
Peter Obi, Atiku, Tinubu Before 2023 Election
Peter Obi was a former governor of Anambra State, with a record of transparency and no corruption charge. Reports abound that he was the only Nigerian governor to have invited the two anti-corruption agencies, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPCP) during his handover days.
The Labour Party presidential candidate was free from corruption charges, even as he served as governor, ex-chairman Fidelity Bank and Security and Exchange Commission (SEC). He performed well as the governor of Anambra State. His transparent qualities were the reason for the youth’s followership.
In 2019, Peter Obi was a vice-presidential candidate to the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku, but left the party in the build-up to the May PDP primary election in 2022 citing ideological differences.
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, a former vice-president of Nigeria, from 1999-2007, under ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo. He was the governor-elect of Adamawa State, a position he left for the vice presidential role. He has been a major contender for the position of president from 2007 to the present 2023 election.
Atiku Abubakar, is a well-grounded politician, who many associates see as a non-tribal politician. Atiku has some corruption allegations. He has always been pointed at in billions of dollars of electricity fraud. Having chaired the first privatization of the country, many political enemies alleged that the Waziri of Adamawa engaged in kickbacks.
Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinub, a former governor of Lagos State. His first step in national politics was a senator in 1992 before he became Lagos governor in 1999. He again became a national icon with his role in the merger that brought APC in 2011.
Tinubu played a critical role in the emergence of President Buhari in 2015. It was his active role in the 2015 election that brought him more to the national political limelight.
On corruption, so many corruption allegations hang on the APC presidential candidate’s neck, including ownership of Alpha Beta. A company that collects revenues for the Lagos state government, which is alleged to be Tinubu’s. There is also the allegation of drug trafficking and no school certificate.
The former governor of Lagos State has denied on many occasions being involved or having anything to do with the allegations.
In the eyes of Mr. Macaroni.
Debo Adedayo, popularly called Mr. Macaroni, is a popular skit maker and a human rights activist. On many occasions, Macaroni was arrested by the Nigerian Police for protesting against bad governance and police brutality. He was manhandled during the Endsars protest in 2020 by the police.
With millions of followers and fans, Debo, has been under pressure from fans to make public his presidential candidate. This his followers believe would help them to make a good choice between Peter Obi, Atiku and Tinubu.
Debo, on several occasions, rejected the call for him to make public his presidential choice, but always tell his fans to vote wisely. Though many of his tweets suggest he is in support of the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
“I don’t Campaign for politicians!! I have nothing against those that do as there is totally nothing wrong in campaigning for those you believe can do the work. I personally just can’t and I won’t!! All I can continue to do is appeal to my people to VOTE WISELY,” he wrote in one of his tweets.
On May 20, Macaroni tweeted, “Simple. I will vote for a good and credible Candidate.
After all primaries have been concluded, I will mention my preferred candidate and cast my vote for the person. One thing is however certain, I will not vote APC or PDP!! Lastly, I won’t harass Nigerians to vote anyone.”
He has however cautioned those who are against Peter Obi on the basis of being an Igbo person.
He said, “Dear Nigerians, If your religious leader is asking you to abandon all the qualities of a good leader and vote for the next President of this Nation just because you are from the same tribe as the candidate, then there is serious fire on the mountain. RUN!!.”
In another indirect reference to those against Obi because of his ‘Obidient’ followers, he wrote, “Doctor, I can’t allow you to save my life because some of your Twitter followers are too aggressive.
“Doctor, I know you are the most qualified to do this job. But your Twitter followers are not respectful.
I expect them to bow at my feet and also explain to me why I should allow you save my life. Even though I already know you are the most capable.”
In the eyes of Frank Edward
The popular gospel artist is among the ‘not expected’ artist and celebrity that has a choice between, the trio under LP, APC, and PDP. though he has not been open about it, but his tweet has suggested to his fans that he is in line with the popular choice of the youths Peter Obi.
Like expected, a visit to his Twitter handle would greet you with a pinned post that read, “If you are following me but haven’t received JESUS yet .. I’d like to introduce u to d 1 who made me who I am today!! Accept JESUS Plssss!”
Below the evangelism post, was a piece of political advice to his millions of followers who are desirous to know his presidential candidate.
He wrote, “This election build-up will reveal to you the true enemies of Nigeria, just keep tabs on utterances and statements. . Now I’m wondering is it not to serve again ?? Or are there any personal pursuits that we don’t know of?”
Down the comment, were Peter Obi supporters praising him for being Obidient.
In the eyes of Davido, Psquare, Tekno

Tekno, a hip-hop musician has also declared his support for Peter Obi, by in a single word when he wrote on his Twitter handle on July 30, “Peter Obi”.
Davido, David Adeleke, has not made his preferred candidate public. But youths believe he would not let them down after their support for his uncle, Senator David Adeleke, who won the Osun July 16 governorship election through youths’ support for the hip-hop artist.
