Trump has signed executive order to shield Americans from “wrongful detention” abroad.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order aimed at protecting U.S. nationals from what his administration calls “wrongful detention” in foreign countries.

The U.S. Department of State, in a statement on Friday, warned that severe consequences await nations or actors who detain Americans unjustly.

“Today, President Trump signed an Executive Order that takes unprecedented action to impose new consequences on those who wrongfully detain Americans abroad,” the statement said.

Under the order, designated “State Sponsors of Wrongful Detention” could face a range of penalties, including economic sanctions, visa restrictions, limitations on foreign aid, and travel restrictions for U.S. passport holders.

The statement further warned, “Like the State Sponsor of Terrorism determination, no nation should want to end up on this list. The bottom line: Anyone who uses an American as a bargaining chip will pay the price.”

“This administration is not only putting America first but also putting Americans first,” it added.
