NewsOnline Nigeria reports that in an unexpected slip during the NATO summit in Washington on Thursday, US President, Joe Biden, mistakenly introduced Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky as “President Putin.”
The gaffe, quickly corrected by Biden himself, has sparked a flurry of reactions both domestically and among international leaders.
Amidst his speech praising Zelensky’s courage, President Biden said, “And now I want to hand it over to the president of Ukraine, who has as much courage as he has determination, ladies and gentlemen, President Putin.”
Realizing the mistake, he promptly corrected himself, attributing the slip to his focus on opposing the Russian leader.
The incident has resonated beyond the confines of the summit, attracting commentary from global leaders, including French President, Emmanuel Macron, who empathized with Biden, noting that anyone can make such errors.
Macron said, “We all slip up sometimes, it’s happened to me and it could happen again tomorrow. I would ask for your indulgence.”
This verbal slip comes at a time when Biden faces increasing pressure from within his party regarding his re-election campaign.
Following a challenging debate performance against Donald Trump, discussions about his capacity to continue leading have intensified.
Currently, 13 Democratic members of the House and one Senator have publicly urged Biden not to seek re-election, citing concerns over his age and capability.
Despite the controversy, Biden’s administration remains steadfast. His aides met with Senate Democrats in an effort to prevent further defections from his campaign, which insists that the debate did not fundamentally alter the dynamics of the upcoming election.
Biden plans to address these concerns in a scheduled news conference, aiming to reassure both the public and his party of his fitness for office.
As the political landscape braces for the forthcoming election, the support within Biden’s party appears increasingly precarious.
The President’s next moves will be crucial in determining his political future amidst rising scrutiny and the ongoing challenges facing his administration.
