In a spectacular showcase of African talent and culture, the 2024 Afro Nation Festival in Portugal is set to feature an impressive lineup of Nigerian artists.
The recent addition of global superstar Nicki Minaj to the top of the performer’s list has understandably caused excitement. However, the presence of some of the best musical acts Nigeria has to offer is an equally enticing prospect.
The Afro Nation Festival has established itself as a premier event celebrating African music, culture, and heritage on a global scale. Each year’s lineup consistently features some of the biggest names in African and global music.
This year’s edition takes place in Portimão on the Algarve from Wednesday, June 26 to Friday, June 28. And it’s gearing up to be one of the most vibrant celebrations of Afrobeat, dancehall, hip hop, and R&B yet.
Let’s take a closer look at the Nigerian sensations among the headliners that are sure to draw in big crowds not just from Nigeria, but from around the world.
Note: If you’re planning to attend Afro Nation in person, you’ll need to apply for a visa for Portugal, as Nigerians are not eligible for the ETIAS visa waiver.
Since bursting onto the scene in 2019 with “Dumebi”, Rema has quickly risen to become one of Afrobeat’s most influential figures. He’s now commonly referred to as the “golden child” of Nigerian music.
His self-titled debut EP peaked at No.1 on Apple Music Nigeria. And let’s not forget that his hit song “Calm Down” gained huge international attention, particularly after it was remixed by Selena Gomez in 2022.
He then re-released his debut album Rave & Roses in April 2023. Featuring 6 new tracks, including the “Calm Down” remix, it became the first African album to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify.
Omah Lay truly represents the new wave of Nigerian music artists who have taken the world by storm with their innovative sounds and storytelling.
Emerging into the limelight in 2020 with his singles “You” and “Bad Influence”, he released his first EP, “Get Layd”, in May of that year. It became an instant hit, peaking at No.1 on Nigerian Apple Music charts.
His subsequent EP “What Have We Done” also garnered millions of streams, cementing his status as a leading figure in the Afro-fusion scene.
But he truly reached new heights when he collaborated with fellow Nigerian singer Alpha P on a remix of Justin Beiber’s single “Peaches” in June 2021. This led to a second collaboration with Bieber, “Attention”, which was released to wide acclaim in March 2022.
Flavour began his music career at the age of 13, playing the drums for his local church, but he’s certainly come a long way since then. His impressive career spans almost 2 decades, and he’s become synonymous with the evolution of highlife music in Nigeria.
Well known for his ability to sing in the Igbo language, his debut album N’abania gained plenty of attention. But his second studio album, Uplifted, supportyed by hit singles “Nwa Baby” and “Adamma”, truly propelled him to new heights.
What’s more, Flavour’s performances, characterised by his dynamic stage presence, are simply electrifying. His ability to connect with audiences, as well as his versatility in merging traditional African sounds with contemporary music, make him a truly beloved figure across the continent and beyond.
Although a relatively recent addition to the Nigerian music scene, Odumodublvck has already carved out a formidable niche for himself with his unique blend of the hip-hop, grime, drill, and Afropop genres.
Signed to the prestigious Def Jam record label, he’s released several hits since his debut single “Picanto”, including the iconic “Declan Rice”.
He’s well known for his use of Nigerian Ppidgin English in his lyrics to convey uniquely Nigerian stories, which resonates with many people in this country.
The 2024 edition of Afro Nation will also feature some other impressive names from Nigeria.
Alongside the previously mentioned Nigerian artists, Asake, Shallipop, and Seyi Vibez are due to appear.
And the addition of Nicki Minaj to the top Afro Nation lineup has, of course, sent waves of excitement through the music world. Minaj’s presence at the festival underscores its global appeal and the bridging of cultures through music.
Then there’s the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Fally Ipupa. A formidable force in African music for over 2 decades, Fally Ipupa’s blend of Congolese rumba and soukous with modern sounds has earned him a loyal global following.
Other big acts in the lineup include French rapper Ninho and the UK’s J Hus, meaning there are plenty of reasons for Nigerians to make the trip to Portugal this June.
