Google has rolled out a theft protection feature for Android.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Google has started rolling out a suite of anti-theft features for Android devices. These features will be available on devices running Android 10 and above. The company introduced these security features at its annual developer conference, Google I/O, earlier this year.

According to a report by 9to5Google, Google is rolling out these features via Play services to ensure wider and faster availability to users.

These new features aim to enhance device security and protect user data in case of theft.

This includes features like Theft Detection Lock, which automatically locks the screen if the phone is abruptly snatched away and Offline Device Lock, which triggers if a thief tries to disable internet connectivity to prevent location tracking. Additionally, a Remote Lock feature will also allow users to lock their device remotely using just their phone number a security challenge.

Google’s anti-theft features in Android: Availability

Earlier, Android expert Mishaal Rahman claimed that Google started testing the Theft detection feature in Brazil in June. Later, the company reportedly started testing this feature on Android devices like Pixel as well as other devices around the world. The latest report claims that the Theft detection feature is now becoming available for more users. However, this does not appear to be the full launch, the report adds.

We at TOI Tech-Gadgets Now tried looking for the feature on Pixel 9 but couldn’t find it. The latest report claims that the feature is available on some Pixel phones. As per the report, all three Theft detection capabilities are appearing for users who are enrolled in the Google Play services beta (version 24.40.33). However, these features were unavailable on the stable channel.

Google’s anti-theft features in Android: Here’s how it works

One of the key features, Theft Detection Lock, uses device sensors, Wi-Fi, and smart device connections to detect if a phone is abruptly snatched away while in use. If detected, the device automatically locks the screen, preventing access to personal data.

Another feature, Offline Device Lock, protects against thieves who try to disable internet connectivity to prevent location tracking. This feature will lock the device if it’s actively being used and the internet connection is turned off.
Additionally, a Remote Lock feature allows users to lock their device remotely via android.com/lock using their phone number and a security challenge. This provides a quick way to secure the device before using Find My Device.
To enable these features, users can search for “Theft protection” in their Android settings or navigate to the redesigned Google services page > All services tab > Personal & device safety as and when they become available.
