FG has dismissed 15 Correctional Officers and demoted 59 over misconduct.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Federal Government has dismissed 15 personnel of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) and demoted 59 others over various cases of misconduct, indiscipline, and violation of service regulations.

The disciplinary actions followed a comprehensive review by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) under the Ministry of Interior, according to a statement by Umar Abubakar, the NCoS Public Relations Officer.

The review covered 224 cases of alleged misconduct across the NCoS. The Board’s Disciplinary and General Purpose Committee (BDGPC) investigated and approved different levels of sanctions based on the severity of each case.

“A total of 15 personnel were dismissed from the Service for serious misconduct. Additionally, 59 officers were demoted, and 42 others received written warnings as corrective measures,” Abubakar said.

In addition:

  • 16 officers were exonerated

  • 7 officers remain under suspension pending further investigation

  • 8 officers were compulsorily retired

  • 1 officer was ordered to refund all salaries earned during wrongful promotion and demoted accordingly

  • 1 officer was recommended for prosecution by the EFCC due to the serious nature of the offence

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunde Ojo, who chairs the CDCFIB, emphasized the Federal Government’s commitment to discipline, integrity, and professionalism in Nigeria’s correctional system.

Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwacuhe, reassured the public that all disciplinary measures will be implemented fairly and in strict compliance with existing rules.

“These actions are part of ongoing reforms aimed at restoring public trust and accountability within the NCoS,” the statement concluded.
