Emdee Tiamiyu Biography: Nigerian YouTuber In UK Under Fire For BBC Student Visa Interview

His interview with the BBC came just as the UK government announced restrictions on study visas for Nigerians and their dependents.

Emdee Tiamiyu has thus taken over the trends and NewsOnline Nigeria breaks down his whole story in this article.

Who Is Emdee Tiamiyu?

Emdee Tiamiyu describes himself as a Software Evangelist, Mandela Washington Fellow, Motivational Speaker, Curator, and Author.

Tiamiyu is a Yoruba from Osun State who gained entry to the UK via a study visa. Aside from his profession, he often records YouTube videos about the visa application process.

Emdee Tiamiyu date of birth is December 19th, although the year is unknown. His age is not exactly clear.

According to LinkedIn, he had his education at Wesley College of Science (WESCOS), Elekuro Ibadan, where he had his Senior Secondary Certificate in 2006.

He proceeded to Ladoke Akintola University of Technology from 2007 to 2012 for a Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science and Engineering.

He also attended Arizona State University in 2016 for a Public Management degree before completing a master’s degree at Vistula University in Management (Project, Business, IT) in 2022.

Emdee Tiamiyu’s LinkedIn Profile describes him as an “Experienced IT consultant, Oracle Certified Professional Database Administrator (OCPDBA), ITIL certified service manager and PRINCE2 certified Practitioner with a background in Computer Science and proven track record in delivering multi-million-pound projects for both public and private sector clients.

“I bring rounded multi-sector experience (client side and consultancy) in innovative business leadership and the practical delivery of projects, encompassing the whole project lifecycle from inception through to completion. Having managed several projects, I am able to collaborate with different levels of stakeholders – including senior management, lead project teams and deliver client-focused results on time and within budget.”

In May 2023, he went viral on Twitter, particularly for granting an interview to the BBC in which he said Nigerians do not actually come to the UK to study but for other reasons.

His video went viral after Nicholas, a UK-based Nigerian mechanical engineer shared it on Twitter.

Nicholas wrote:” In case Nigerians are looking for village people to blame (on study visa issue), see your brother Emdee Tiamiyu exposing himself on tv for the world to see,”

The video went viral, garnering over 800,000 views as at press time. Tiamiy himself shared it.

In the video, the U.K based Youtuber told a BBC reporter: “So the student (visa) thing is not like they need the degree. They need the degree as an access route to come into the country. So a lot of these people get their priorities shifted real fast,”

Social media blew up over his claims.

Some reactions include: “This guy is a d*ickhead  This bbc interview was totally unnecessary. Why? You basically went to TV to call your own people dishonest. You no dey follow uk/local politics? Are you dumb, self-centred or both?”

Another said: “When indians do interview or videos, it is to advice other indians on how to survive abroad. When my people do interview, if they’re not talking about couples that divorced immediately they traveled abroad, they will be blocking others from traveling. Sigh!,”

A third reaction said: “The way the d guy even dey set him up and baba just dey download   u go know say na fowl nyash d guy chop when him dey small…”

Emdee Tiamiyu responded to his newfound attention, writing on Twitter: “People wey never share any of my videos ever ever don dey share am today! Negative energy is awesome! Thank you

Why Is Emdee Tiamiyu trending?

Emdee Tiamiyu is trending after ‘selling out’ Nigerians on the issue of student visas.

He told the BBC in an interview that most Nigerians and their dependents get study visas to the UK for the wrong reasons.

He claimed they’re not really interested in the education but leaving Nigeria behind for a new life in the UK.

Emdee Tiamiyu’s comments come at the same time as the United Kingdom put in place a law that will see Nigerian students, and others studying in the UK from bringing family as dependents except under specific circumstances.

Under the new rule, the UK will remove the permission for international students to switch out of the student route and into work routes before their studies have been completed to prevent misuse of the visa system.

Sky News also added that “there will also be a review of the maintenance requirement for students and dependents and a crackdown on “unscrupulous” education agents “who make use of inappropriate applications to sell immigration, not education”.

This change takes effect January 2024 to allow students starting courses in the UK time to plan to adapt to the new rules.

This new law comes after indications had emerged that the UK plans to put stricter laws in place to bring down the climbing number of immigrants into the country via studies.

In a written ministerial statement on Tuesday, Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, said recent immigration figures had shown an “unexpected rise” in the number of dependants coming to the UK alongside international students.

According to the BBC, about a fifth of all study visas to the UK were to Nigerians and their dependents.
