President Trump has approved an emergency HIV Treatment Waiver for Nigeria and 55 54 other countries.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the United States government has granted an emergency humanitarian waiver to sustain US-funded HIV treatment programs in 55 countries, including Nigeria.

This comes after a recent executive order by President Donald Trump, which paused foreign aid funding for HIV treatment in developing nations. As a result, the US Department of State suspended disbursements from the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

PEPFAR currently provides life-saving HIV treatment to over 20 million people globally, including 566,000 children under 15 years old.

In response to the waiver, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) expressed relief, emphasizing that the decision ensures continued access to critical medication for millions.

“UNAIDS welcomes this waiver from the US government, which ensures that millions of people living with HIV can continue to receive life-saving medication during the assessment of US foreign development assistance,” the statement read.
