Rivers State House of Assembly has resumed plenary and moved to probe the financial activities during emergency rule.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Rivers State House of Assembly reconvened on Thursday, September 18, 2025, following the end of the six-month Emergency Rule declared by President Bola Tinubu on March 18, 2025.

The session, presided over by Speaker Hon. Martin Amaewhule, prioritized restoring democratic processes and addressing critical state issues.

In a key development, the House approved a motion to probe financial dealings and contracts awarded during the emergency rule, sponsored by nine members, including Hon. Major Jack-House Leader, Hon. Linda Somiari-Stewart, Hon. Sylvanus Nwankwo, Hon. Granville Wellington, Hon. Justina Emeji, Hon. Barile Nwakoh, Hon. Igwe Obey Aforji, Hon. Enemi Alabo George, and Hon. Tonye Adoki Smart. The probe aims to provide a clear picture of expenditures from the Consolidated Revenue Fund and ensure transparency and accountability.

The Assembly also commended President Tinubu for restoring democratic governance in Rivers State and called on Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara to submit the list of commissioner-nominees for the State Executive Council, in accordance with the Constitution and the terms of the peace parley. Members further urged the Governor to commence drafting the Appropriation Bill for the remainder of the year to address pressing financial and developmental needs.

Acknowledging the successful local government elections on August 30, which produced 23 LGA chairmen and councillors, the House emphasized collaboration with the Governor to develop a financial plan and legislative agenda that reflect the aspirations of the people.

Speaker Amaewhule reiterated that the House will continue to uphold the peace parley and the Constitution, ensuring governance in Rivers State is transparent, accountable, and responsive to citizens’ needs.

The Assembly plans to align its legislative activities for the remainder of the third session of the 10th Assembly with current realities, ensuring policies and laws address the state’s urgent socio-economic priorities.
