1. The National Deputy President of the Trade Union Congress, Tommy Etim, on Thursday, berated moves by the Federal Government to hamstring the Organised Labour from embarking on an indefinite nationwide strike from Tuesday, using the courts. Etim stated that labour leaders would not succumb to any threat by the government, noting that they were ready to go to prison in their fight for better lives for Nigerian workers.

2. The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar, has filed a fresh motion urging the United States Court to overrule President Bola Tinubu’s request to stop Chicago State University from releasing his (Tinubu’s) academic record.

3. The Lagos State Police Command has arrested controversial Lagos socialite, Balogun Eletu, aka Sam Larry, over an ongoing investigation into the circumstances leading to the death of the singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, aka Mohbad. The Lagos State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the development on Thursday night.

4. A former Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (North-West), Mallam Salihu Lukman, on Thursday, held a meeting with two former national chairmen of the party, Bisi Akande and Adams Oshiomhole, in Abuja over the need to reform the APC. In a statement he issued after the meeting, Lukman said they deliberated on some issues of concern about the internal affairs of the ruling party.

5. Jubilation broke out at the secretariat of the Labour Party in Abuja when the Supreme Court on Thursday affirmed Senator Athan Achonu as the rightful candidate for the November 11 election in Imo State. Achonu is aiming to become the first physically challenged governor in the country on the platform of LP in the off-season election taking place in the State.

6. Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Kaduna State, Isa Ashiru, has urged his party supporters to remain law abiding while they pursue the appeal process. Ashiru in a statement he personally signed and issued after the tribunal verdict, assured the people of Kaduna that he will pursue the mandate they gave him to its logical conclusion.

7. The Plateau State election petition tribunal in Jos, on Thursday, sacked two members of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Maren Ishaku and Timothy Datong, representing Bokkos and Riyom constituencies, respectively. The sacked lawmakers were elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last general election.

8. The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says it does not have any date for a meeting with the federal government that may lead to the suspension of the proposed strike scheduled to commence next Tuesday. This is just as the organised labour vowed to mobilise all its affiliates and members across the country to ensure full compliance to the declaration of the proposed strike with a view to pressing home its demands until they are met.

9. Members of the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI) have been put on notice for the industrial action billed to start October 3. In a notice on Thursday by its President, Williams Akporeha, NUPENG urged its branches and units to take note and ensure full compliance by setting up compliance and monitoring teams in all operational locations.

10. The National Economic Council (NEC) yesterday urged labour leaders to halt their strike plan and give the government more time to address their concerns. The NEC, an economic advisory body made up of some federal agencies, the Central Bank of Nigeria, (CBN) and governors, is chaired by the Vice President. It decided yesterday to advise labour to negotiate with the governors in pursuit of redress to their grievances over the subsidy removal pain.
