Katy Perry, Eminem and Kesha have been slammed for chilling Jeffrey Dahmer references in hit songs.
Newsonline reports that Netflix viewers have been gripped by the new biographical crime drama around Jeffrey Dahmer. Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story looks at the life of the killer, known as the ‘Milwaukee Monster’ and his trail of murders.
This online news platform understands that the American was beaten to death while in prison for committing the murder and dismemberment of seventeen men and boys between 1978 and 1991.
Given the severity of the crime, Newsonline reports that Katy Perry, Eminem and Kesha have been slammed by music fans over song lyrics referencing the crimes of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, following the release of Netflix’s Monster Dahmer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.
The 10-part series stars Evan Peters as the murderer and explores the 13 years he spent committing crimes before his arrest in 1990.
The new release shows how Dahmer got away with his horrific crimes and has had everyone talking about the serial killer.
The series has also sparked interest in past pop culture references to Dahmer, with people taking to Twitter to criticise Katy Perry, Eminem and Kesha for their early 2010s hits which reference the criminal.
In Katy Perry’s Dark Horse, rapper Juicy J says: “She’s a beast I call her Karma. She eats your heart like Jeffrey Dahmer.”
Fans have called the lyrics “wrong” and “disrespectful” and decided to hold Katy accountable.
One person tweeted: “Katy Perry should catch some heat for using the lyric, ‘She eat your heart out like Jeffrey Dahmer’. The level of disrespect to the victims and their families.”
Another said: “Jeffrey was a notorious serial killer & Katy CHOSE to romanticise his criminal & inhumane actions. I actually feel sick to my stomach. She NEEDS to apologise.”
“Knowing the depths of what jeffrey dahmer did….juicy j wrong for what he said in that katy perry song,” penned a third.
Kesha’s 2010 song Cannibal, which rose to prominence recently on TikTok, also references Dahmer.
In the EP that was released over a decade ago, Kesha compares herself to Dahmer, saying: “I want your liver on a platter, use my finger to stir my tea.
“And for dessert I’ll suck your teeth be too sweet and you’ll be a goner, yeah, I’ll pull a Jeffrey Dahmer.”
Eminem has included references to Dahmer in three of his songs.
He has the lyric: “Cause I’d probably be Dahmer” in his 2013 song Brainless and also made references to Dahmer in the 2009 songs Must Be The Ganja and Bagpipes From Bagdad.
While some people continued to criticise the musicians for their lyrics, others called the backlash “stupid”.
One person said: “First I want to make it clear I am not agreeing with anything Jeffrey Dahmer did, however, artists like Katy Perry and Kesha getting slammed for their lyrics in a song they released YEARS ago is literally stupid.”
Others added that the lyrics were only being called into question because of Netflix’s new show and were not criticised at the time of release.
