Former MTN CEO, Dabengwa is dead.

 

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that Former MTN Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Raymond Sifiso Dabengwa, has been confirmed dead.

According to a statement released by his family on Monday, September 2, Dabengwa succumbed to cancer.

In the statement, Dabengwa has been described as a “titan in the telecommunications industry” and an “astute businessman.”

His family praised his visionary leadership, integrity, and dedication, which drove significant advancements during his tenure as CEO from 2011 to 2015.

Born in Zimbabwe, Dabengwa joined MTN in 2004 as CEO of MTN Nigeria before becoming the group CEO in March 2011. He resigned in November 2015, following a $5.2 billion fine in Nigeria for failing to disconnect unregistered subscribers.

Dabengwa’s career spanned various roles, including executive director at Eskom. He held a BSc in Electrical Engineering and an MBA.

He was also listed among South Africa’s 200 richest individuals based on disclosed directors’ holdings in JSE-listed companies.
