Newsonline Nigeria reports that Bank Verification Number (BVN) is an identity-based security measure introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in 2015 to curb fraudulent transactions in the banking system.
BVN is an 11-digit number that is unique to each individual but uniformly used across all bank institutions for the same individual.
The BVN system which works by recording fingerprints and a facial photograph of a bank customer, helps to curb cases of identity theft in the banking system. It is meant to authenticate the identification of customers at transaction points.
Due to the centrality of BVN in customer account management today, different banks have developed ways of helping customers link their BVN with their accounts.
For different reasons, account holders need to have access to their BVN details. Doing so through the United Bank for Africa (UBA) online is possible and convenient.
United Bank for Africa is a pan-African financial institution. With its corporate headquarters located in Lagos, Nigeria, UBA has its operations spread across 20 African countries and offices in New York, Paris, and London.
Having access to your BVN details in UBA can be achieved through two methods.
You can either use the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) code or you can use the UBA mobile banking app or online platform. The USSD option doesn’t require an Internet connection while the bank app or online platform does.
The USSD code is one of the fastest and easiest ways to have access to your BVN. To use this method, all you have to do is dial *565*0# on the phone containing the number linked to your BVN and your BVN will be displayed on your phone screen.
It, however, comes with a service charge of NGN20 deducted from your airtime balance.
This option is unlike the USSD, as it requires an internet connection and a smartphone or mobile device to access it.
To do that you need to follow the simple steps below:
Log into the UBA online banking platform known as the UBA online
Access your account on the online platform.
Scroll to the BVN section.
You will then get all your BVN details.
Alternatively, you can download and install UBA Mobile App and register. After registration, tap on the profile icon found at the top right corner of the app’s interface. Scroll down until you see the Security Information section. There you will find your BVN details displayed and you can copy them out.
You need BVN to access various financial services in your bank as it is specifically for identity management.
If you don’t have access to the SIM linked to your BVN either because it is damaged or the phone is stolen and you can’t also use an internet-enabled smart device you can visit the nearest UBA branch to retrieve or obtain your BVN.
At the bank, you’ll be asked to provide a valid means of identification (either a national ID card, driving licence, international passport, or any other form of identification that may be acceptable) and your account number. Once you provide them with those requirements, your BVN will be accessed, printed, and given to you.
