Newsonline reports that the 2022/2023 German Bundesliga season started on the 5th of August, with Bayern Munchen pummeling Eintracht Frankfurt in a 6-1 demolition. It made way for an interesting first week of games, and we saw many Bundesliga predictions miss and others hit. The first round of games was enjoyable, without any doubt.
We saw SC Freiburg win 4-0, the only other game with more than a three-goal margin. There were other exciting games with at least four goals. These included Union Berlin vs. Hertha BSC, VFL Wolfsburg vs. Werder Bremen, Borussia M’gladbach vs. Hoffenheim, and FC Cologne vs. Schalke 04.
With an enjoyable first round of games, we prepared for an epic second round where we would have the teams go again. We were expecting an exciting round of games, and fortunately, we got an epic run with many games ending in a tight run. These games were hard to predict, and many punters struggled to make solid Bundesliga picks.
We expected the top teams to have an easy ride because it is only the season’s first few weeks. Borussia Dortmund delivered on that note, dominating Freiburg to get their second win of the season. However, they couldn’t keep a clean sheet as they did in the first game.
Given how the second week turned out, let’s see four of the most exciting ties of Matchday two to see how the new season is going and what we should expect in the coming weeks. Without wasting time, let’s get into it.
In this matchup, Leipzig was the clear favorite to win. However, it didn’t go according to many Bundesliga predictions today. Many expected a close game, but they believed Leipzig would eventually get a good win from the tie, making their statement for the season after getting only one point in the first game of the season.
So, when Timo Werner opened the scoring in the 36th minute, following Dani Olmo’s goal overturned, we thought it would be Leipzig’s domination. But, four minutes later, Florian Dietz equalized for Cologne to end the first half in a draw. Unfortunately, Leipzig had to end the half with ten men after Dominik Szoboszlai received a red card for violent conduct.
Leipzig tried to hold their own and continue to push for the win, and they got a second through Christopher Nkunku with an assist from Dani Olmo. Things were looking up for the team, but Josko Gvardiol’s own goal ended the game in misery for the Red Bull team, and they had to settle for a draw for the second game running.
This game had more talking points as the goalscoring started in the fourth minute, with Niclas Fullkrug scoring from a decent strike. The game went back and forth, and we expected more goals. We weren’t disappointed as Wataru Endo scored to make the game level before the end of the first half.
From the start of the second half to the 70th minute, the game was about missed chances and pushing for victory from both sides. We saw two teams that wanted to win. And it was Stuttgart that got close to that objective when Silas Katompa Mvumpa scored to put them in the driving seat in the 77th minute.
It seemed like the game was going to end in a Stuttgart victory. They defended well but couldn’t hold on for the game’s last five minutes. In the 95th minute, Oliver Burke scored to level the game and share the points between both sides.
Another game with an epic story in week two of the 2022/2023 Bundesliga season is the game between Schakle 04 and Borussia Monchengladbach. The game started with Rodrigo Zalazar scoring the first goal in the 29th minute with an assist from Tobias Mohr, setting the game in motion.
The first half ended in a Schakle 04 victory, and we thought it would go that way, but in the 72nd minute, Jonas Hofmann equalized for M’gladbach. After that, Marcus Thuram scored the second goal to put the away team ahead in the 78th minute.
But the game didn’t end there as Marius Bulter equalized for Schakle in the 93rd minute from a late-minute penalty after Patrick Hermann handled the ball.
This game is different from the other ones we’ve been talking about. VFL Bochum opened the scoring with Simon Zoller in the 10th minute. Three minutes later, Zoller scored another to double the team’s lead, making it a long day for Hoffenheim.
However, Christoph Baumgartner and Ozan Kabak rescued the team from ending the first half in a draw. Hoffenheim got a penalty in the second half, but Andrej Kramaric squandered it. But fortunately for the home team, Munas Dabbur delivered just a little over 10 minutes after he was subbed in.
