Former President Jonathan

Former President Jonathan has sent a strong message to African Leaders on democracy.

 

 

Newsonline reports that Former President Jonathan through The Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) has challenged African leaders to safeguard democracies.

 

Ann Iyonu, Director of the organization founded by the ex-President, gave the charge in a statement on the 2021 International Day of Democracy.

 

The day is observed in countries across the world every September 15.

 

GJF urged governments to deliver good governance, prioritise credible elections and guarantee the rights of all citizens.

 

The body lamented the disregard for democratic values such as separation of powers and term limits.

 

Iyonu warned that such tendencies would negatively affect the continent and the people.

 

The ED said civil leadership should bring about peace, equality, justice, inclusion and sustainable development.

 

“In many African countries, the essential values of democracy such as the rule of law, separation of powers and constitutional term limits are no longer adhered to.

 

“This situation poses threat to the survival of democracy in Africa, as the promises of peace, justice and human freedoms are daily betrayed,’’ she noted.
