The Federal government has mandated Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram to delegate some content within 24 hours of such content being uploaded on their platforms.

Newsonline reports that the new directive is contained in the revised Code of Practice for social media platforms released by the Federal government after the Twitter ban.

The Federal Government said such content that parades partial or full nudity, sexual acts, deep fake or revenge porn should be taken down from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and TikTok within 24 hours of users posting.

“Act expeditiously to remove, disable, or block access to non-consensual content that exposes a person’s private areas, full or partial nudity, sexual act, or revenge porn, where such content is targeted to harass, disrepute, or intimidate an individual.

“A platform must acknowledge the receipt of the complaint and take down the content within 24 hours,” the Code of Practice read.

The Federal Government gave out the directive on Monday in the new  Code of Practice for social interactive platforms.

The Federal government also directs each online platform with about 100,000 Nigerian subscribers or users to immediately have a country representative, that will interface with the Nigerian authorities and an office in the country.

Other conditions in the new code of Practice include; registering with the Corporate Affairs Commission as a legal entity, complying with tax obligations, abiding by regulatory and legal demands, and providing information about users on-demand.

Newsonline reports that a part of the Code of Practice that states providing information about users to the government has been criticized as an infringement by the government on citizens’ right to privacy.

According to National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, the Code of Practice is aimed at safeguarding the fundamental human rights of Nigerians, and foreigners living in Nigeria and regulating interactions on the online platform.
