The presidential candidate of the Labour Party has made an apology to popular activist, Aisha Yesufu, following remarks about police brutality and #Endsars.
Newsonline reports that the Tweeter space on 15th October was thrown into battlefield by the supporters of the former governor of Anambra State’s presidential ambition.
One of the organizers of the #Endsars movement in October 2020, Rinu Oduala questioned Peter Obi on his plan to address police brutality which led to the Lekki massacre on 20 October 2020 in Lagos.
Rinu Oduala asked, “How does Mr Peter Obi intend to tackle police brutality?”
The question by Rinu, also a supporter of Peter Obi, Obidient, was seen by other Obidients as unnecessary which provoked attack on the person of Rinu.
The controversy became more pronounced when human rights activist and Peter Obi supporter, Aisha Yesufu, backed Rinu with a tweet, “Peter Obi MUST provide the answer on how he is going to tackle police brutality. No ifs or buts about it!”
Following the war of words among the Labour Party presidential candidate supporters, Obi had to come in to address the issue, calling on Aisha Yesufu and other supporters to allow for criticism of his policies.
Peter Obi wrote, “I have noticed that some who have questioned or constructively criticized my actions or pronouncements are also being criticized for speaking up. The new Nigeria we seek is one in which citizens can criticize and hold leaders accountable.
“I welcome such constructive criticisms; it will make our leadership better, adaptive and responsive. When Aisha Yesufu criticizes me publicly, I know they both mean well for me and for Nigeria. I know I have them in my corner. Salute!”
