Newsonline had earlier reported that Former US Secretary of State Colin Powell has died of Covid-19 complications at 84, his family announced on Monday.
Newsonline Nigeria understands that Powell was a former top military officer who rose to become the first African-American secretary of state in 2001 under Republican George W Bush.
1. Colin Luther Powell was born in New York City on April 5, 1937.
2. He was an African-American politician, diplomat and four-star general who served as the 65th United States Secretary of State from 2001 to 2005.
3. He was the first African-American US Secretary of State.
4. He served as the 16th United States National Security Advisor from 1987 to 1989 and as the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989 to 1993.
5. He studied geology and graduated with Honours at City College of New York (CCNY).
6. He served as a soldier for 35 years and rose to the rank of four-star general.
7. He became a Commander in the U.S. Army Forces in 1989
8. His last military assignment was from October 1989 to September 1993, as the 12th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest military position in the Department of Defense.
9. He won numerous U.S. and foreign military awards and decorations.
