President Tinubu has come under pressure to declare a state of emergency in Zamfara and Katsina over rising insecurity and killings.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the recent massacre in Malumfashi, Katsina State, where gunmen killed dozens of worshippers and villagers, describing it as fresh evidence of Nigeria’s collapsing security architecture.

In a statement on Sunday signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC linked the killings to a wider wave of terror sweeping Katsina and Zamfara States, where over 140 people have reportedly been murdered in the last two months.

The party accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of neglecting urgent security concerns while “jet-setting across the world,” and demanded the immediate declaration of a State of Emergency in the two troubled states.

“The carnage in Katsina comes on the heels of the recent killings in Zamfara, where 47 people were slaughtered, including 38 hostages murdered even after ransom was paid. Taken together, over 140 Nigerians have been murdered in just two months in Katsina and Zamfara alone,” the statement read.

The ADC also faulted President Tinubu for failing to directly console victims’ families or reassure citizens, insisting that diplomacy abroad was meaningless without safety at home.

The opposition party further criticised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors for holding a political meeting in Zamfara just days after the bloodshed, calling the act “insensitive and disrespectful to the memory of the victims.”

According to the ADC, the escalating bloodshed and the Chief of Defence Staff’s recent call for citizens to learn self-defence highlight the urgent need to overhaul Nigeria’s entire security framework.

“The ruling APC and the PDP have shown they care more about power than the people,” the party concluded.
