President Tinubu has approved fresh appointment.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Professor Yusuf Muhammad Yusuf as a Commissioner of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission (NLRC).

This comes as the Senate, during a recent plenary session, confirmed Professor Dakas C.J. Dakas as Chairman of the Commission and Dr. Uchenna Eugene Okolocha as Commissioner representing the South-South region.

The confirmations followed the presentation and adoption of a report by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, chaired by Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (Ondo Central).

The appointments are in line with Section 2 (1) and (2) of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission Act, 2022, which empowers the President to appoint a Chairman and three Commissioners, subject to Senate confirmation.

According to the committee report, only two of the three initial nominees—Professor Dakas and Dr. Okolocha—appeared for the screening conducted on June 25, 2025. The third nominee, Professor Fatima Alkali from the North-East, declined her nomination and formally notified the Presidency of her decision.

The committee noted that both Dakas and Okolocha fulfilled all constitutional and professional criteria, demonstrated strong competence, and had no pending petitions or adverse security findings.

In its recommendation, the panel urged the Presidency to consider a new nominee from the North-East, preferably a woman, to preserve regional and gender balance on the Commission.
