NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Federal Government has set up a working group tasked with reviewing the Laws of the Federation, to update and propose new legislation to support the nation’s development across various sectors.
This Nigeria news platform understands that the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), announced the ceremony marking the start of the 2024/2025 Legal Year.
He emphasized the importance of adapting Nigeria’s legal framework to current national and global challenges.
Fagbemi said, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR is aware of the concerns about the status of our laws and the urgent need to review the Laws of the Federation.
“It is obvious that our laws need to respond to current developments not only nationally but also globally. Our desire to make rapid progress in all aspects of our socio-economic and indeed political life requires that we have enabling and empowering legislation. It is for this reason that the Federal Government has constituted a working group on the Review of the Laws of the Federation.”
A former Attorney General of Ekiti State, Olawale Fapohunda (SAN), has been appointed to chair the working group.
Fapohunda is well-regarded for his contributions to justice sector reforms at both state and federal levels.
He has been a key figure in the enactment of several transformative laws, including the Judicial Remuneration Act, which increased judicial officers’ salaries by 300%, and other significant legal reforms such as the Administration of Criminal Justice Act and the Police Act.
The last comprehensive review of the country’s laws occurred in 2004.
In expressing gratitude to Fapohunda and the other members of the working group for their willingness to serve, the AGF affirmed the government’s commitment to delivering a revised and updated legal framework by the start of the 2025 Legal Year.
