ASUU has declared natonwide indefinite strike over delayed June salaries.
NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has directed its members across the country to embark on an indefinite strike, citing the federal government’s failure to pay June 2025 salaries as the reason for the action.
The strike, already in effect in several institutions, follows the union’s “No Pay, No Work” policy and is backed by a resolution of ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC), which mandates withdrawal of service if salaries are not paid within three days of a new month.
Branches of the union at the University of Jos and University of Abuja have officially withdrawn services, with academic activities and meetings now suspended. A strike monitoring committee has been put in place to enforce compliance across affected campuses.

ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, confirmed the development, stressing that the strike was triggered by persistent salary delays and growing financial hardship among members. He added that the recent transition from the Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System (IPPIS) to the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) has only worsened payment delays.
Despite several meetings with key government officials, including the Minister of Education and the Accountant General, the union said no tangible resolution has been reached. Professor Piwuna alleged that the delay does not stem from technical issues, but rather appears to be a deliberate action by certain government officials.
In addition to salary concerns, ASUU is also demanding the immediate release of the remaining ₦10 billion from the ₦50 billion approved for Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), warning that further neglect could trigger a broader industrial crisis.
At the University of Jos, ASUU Branch Chairman, Dr. Jurbe Molwus, confirmed that the local congress had fully endorsed the strike directive, halting all lectures and statutory academic duties. The University of Abuja chapter has also joined the strike in protest.
ASUU has stated that the only path to restoring academic activities is for the federal government to promptly pay all outstanding salaries and honour its commitments to university staff.
