BREAKING: APC Set To Elect New National Chairman Amid Internal Controversy

Sources indicate that the meeting was intended to secure buy-in for the proposed timetable for the upcoming congresses and ensure state-level alignment with the national structure ahead of the 2026 convention.

APC will meet today to elect new national chairman amid internal leadership controversy.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that new National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is expected to emerge today as the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) convenes in Abuja.

The NEC meeting, scheduled for 10 am at the APC National Secretariat, is set to appoint a substantive replacement for Abdullahi Ganduje, who recently resigned from the position due to health reasons.

In the lead-up to the NEC meeting, the National Working Committee (NWC), the party’s top administrative body, held a closed-door meeting on Monday, where the agenda for the NEC session was finalised.

Although details of the two-hour meeting were not officially released, a member of the NWC confirmed to The Nation that deliberations centred on naming a new chairman and finalising a timetable for the party’s congresses ahead of the next national convention.

In preparation for the NEC meeting, multiple strategic gatherings were held between Monday and Tuesday.

On Monday, directors of various departments within the APC reportedly met at the Presidential Villa to finalise the attendee list for Thursday’s NEC.

Those expected to attend the NEC Meeting include the President, Vice President, members of the National Working Committee, the Senate President, his Deputy, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, his Deputy, all elected party governors, and Speakers of APC-controlled State Houses of Assembly.

The Acting National Chairman of the party, Ali Bukar Dalori, also convened a crucial meeting with APC State Chairmen at the national secretariat on Tuesday.

Sources indicate that the meeting was intended to secure buy-in for the proposed timetable for the upcoming congresses and ensure state-level alignment with the national structure ahead of the 2026 convention.

Later that same day, APC Governors met with the NWC at a strategic session in Asokoro, Abuja, further reinforcing unity within the party as it prepares to unveil its new leadership.

A member of the NWC who spoke in confidence said, “We are prepared for the NEC meeting. Letters have been sent out to all the members of the committee, and the NWC has been meeting with other organs of the party in order to have a hitch free meeting on Thursday.”

When asked when the party’s caucus meeting will be held, the source said: “I am not sure of the caucus meeting. All our discussions either at the party Secretariat or with the Presidency have centered on the NEC meeting. I am afraid we are just going to have our NEC meeting.

“Mr. President and other leaders of the party and all NEC members have been invited, and the meeting will surely produce a substantive National Chairman that will replace our former Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.”

On the agenda of the meeting, the source said, “I am not at liberty to divulge the agenda to you. All I know is that the appointment of National Chairman is the main focus, while other issues such as the congresses will be tabled at the meeting.”
