Air Peace Incident in Port Harcourt

Air Peace Pilot and Co-Pilot have tested positive for alcohol and hard drugs.

NewsOnline Nigeria reports that the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has revealed that an Air Peace pilot and co-pilot tested positive for alcohol and hard drugs after a serious runway incident involving the airline’s aircraft.

This was disclosed in a preliminary report signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at NSIB, Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, on Friday.

According to the report, the incident occurred on July 13, 2025, when an Air Peace Boeing 737 aircraft carrying 103 passengers veered off the runway after landing at the Port Harcourt International Airport. Fortunately, all passengers and crew disembarked safely with no injuries or damage reported.

The NSIB investigation revealed that the crew executed an unstabilised final approach, leading the aircraft to land long 2,264 metres from the runway threshold and eventually stopping 209 metres into the clearway.

Toxicological tests conducted on the crew at Rivers State Hospital Management, Department of Medical Laboratory, Port Harcourt, returned positive results. The captain and first officer tested positive for ethyl glucuronide, a marker of recent alcohol consumption, while a cabin crew member tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound in cannabis.

“These results are being reviewed under human performance and safety management, which are critical factors in aviation investigations,” the report stated.

Following the findings, the NSIB has issued immediate safety recommendations to Air Peace. The airline has been directed to strengthen crew resource management training, enforce strict monitoring of crew fitness-for-duty, and improve go-around decision-making procedures.

The bureau assured that the investigation is ongoing, with further details to be released in its final report.
