The National President Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Emmanuel Osedeke, has disclosed that the National Executive Committee of the university lecturers body left the Federal government meeting held on Tuesday as a result of their unseriousness.

Newsonline reports that ASUU National President Osedeke said the meeting did not come out with anything good, stating that the strike which is in its 184 days continues.

ASUU regretted that the Federal government sent the same Professor Nimi Briggs committee that it had met before to beg them.

Professor Nimi Briggs’ committee, ASUU said, did not bring anything new to the table but an appeal for the body to return to class without the government meeting their demands.

Professor Osodeke in an interview with PUNCH said, ‘‘It wasn’t good,” referring to the meeting.

“We didn’t sign anything; they did not come with anything good. I can’t go into details. We will talk to our members first before we talk to the press. We represent our members.’’

Another ASUU committee member disclosed, “The meet with the FG’s team was headed by Professor Nimi Briggs and it started by 12:00 pm and ended by 3:00 pm. There was no new offer on the table, they simply begged us to call off the strike.”

ASUU downed tools on the 14 of February in protest of poor funding of university education by the Federal government. The strike which is entering six months has caused psychological problems to the students according to educational psychologists.

There is less commitment from the Federal government to resolve the strike. According to ASUU, the government officials have their children in universities outside the country, which they blamed for the government’s laxity in response.
