A Close Encounter with Community Policing: My Experience – Sulaiman Aledeh

As someone who frequently discusses the significance of community policing on the Morning Drive on EBS Radio, I find myself at the forefront of this vital community initiative. This experience reinforces my belief in the power of community vigilance and cooperation.

While I am out with friends Andy and Kingsley Bello, we come across an unusual scene. A tricycle, commonly referred to as a “Keke,” carries four massive pipes that appear to have been uprooted from their original burial site. Instantly, my intuition tells me they are likely stolen, a suspicion born of the troubling pattern of theft in our beloved Edo State.

Numerous households, mine included, are suffering at the hands of opportunistic scavengers who target plumbing, electrical fittings, and even roofing from homes, particularly those that are unoccupied.

Driven by a sense of responsibility, we approach the tricycle operators and ask about the origin of their load. They claim the pipes were given to them by their owner. However, their evasive responses and the excuse that their phone is off raise red flags. When pressed further, they provide a contact number. When I reach out, the person on the other end categorically denies any involvement with the pipes.

Determined not to let this go unchecked, we decide to follow the operators to ensure the truth comes to light. However, when they suddenly veer off course, my suspicions are confirmed. We swiftly intercept their path, confiscate the Keke’s keys, and Andy Bello heads to the nearest police station.

Thanks to our timely intervention and collaboration with the police, the operators are apprehended and taken to the Iyekogba Police Station for further investigation.

I am particularly grateful for the leadership of Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, who is making significant strides to ensure our state remains safe and secure. His emphasis on community policing is beginning to bear fruit, as evidenced by the peaceful atmosphere we enjoyed during the recent Christmas and New Year celebrations. Today, I take action against suspected thieves, illustrating how his vision translates into real results on the ground.

This firsthand experience serves as a powerful testament to the impact of community policing. It highlights the essential role every citizen plays in watching over one another to maintain the safety and integrity of our neighbourhoods. By standing together and staying vigilant, we can continue to combat crime and foster a secure and united community across Edo State.

In sharing this story, I hope to inspire others to actively participate in our collective effort to protect what is dear to us. Let us continue to bolster the bonds that tie us together and watch out for one another—the true essence of community policing.

Happy New Year 🎊
