2023 Election: Why Catholic Church Will Not Vote Muslim-Muslim Ticket- Cardinal Onaiyekan

Emeritus Archbishop of Abuja Catholic Archdiocese, Cardinal John Onaiyekan has said by the ruling APC fielding Muslim-Muslim tickets, means they are ready to take the outcome of the decision.

Newsonline reports that the Catholic Cardinal said as one man who has one vote to cast on the election day, he cannot vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) Muslim-Muslim tickets of Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima.

Cardinal John stated this during the first synod of the Catholic Diocese of Osogbo at Our Lady and St. Kizito Pastoral Centre, Oke Gada Ede, on Wednesday.

The Archbishop Emeritus said the Catholic Church Bishop Conference of Nigeria did not give a statement on the Muslim-Muslim ticket because the APC believed they have made their best political decision that will guarantee their winning in the 2023 election.

Cardinal Onaiyekan said there was no point for the catholic church to tell them not to take their decision but they should be ready to face the consequences of the decision.

According to Onaiyekan: “You will note that the Catholic Bishop Conference has not taken any action on Muslim/Muslim ticket of APC on this matter. The reason is that the Muslim/Muslim ticket is a political decision taken by APC as a party on the calculation that is their best way to win the election or ensure their victory in 2023.

“There is no point telling them not to take such a decision, all you can say is that they will have to accept responsibility for the decision they have taken. I only have one voter’s card and by God’s grace, I will use it. I will not vote for a Muslim/Muslim ticket, that is my decision.”
